Back to School: Transform It Today! {Part 4}

This week we are concentrating on various ways to transform a simple shirt for back to school clothes. Today let’s start with a plain red shirt.Original Red ShirtFind some coordinating cotton print fabrics that will look nice with the red shirt fabric. Cut circles of three graduating sizes from the fabrics. (I used the top and bottom of a juice glass for a template for the two larger circles and a small spool of thread for the smallest circle.) Lay out the circles in various combinations of three circles in each pile. Find assorted buttons from your button jar for the center of the circles.Circle Flowers and buttonsArrange the piles of circles on the shirt where you want them and pin the circles in place. Set the buttons aside for later. Sew a zig-zag stitch around the edge of the smallest fabric circle in each pile to attach to the shirt. Then sew each button in place by hand in the center of each circle pile. Transformed shirtNow toss the shirt into the washer and dryer. The edges of the circles will fray and curl up a little. That’s ok. You now have a beautiful bouquet of flowers on your shirt!Flowers after washingClose up fabric flowers on shirtGot a shirt that needs some new life? Use your fabric scraps and buttons and transform them into a bouquet of flowers for the shirt! It’s quick and easy to do and you can use all different types of fabrics for your flowers. If you don’t have yardage fabric available, perhaps you have another garment in your closet that you no longer want from which you can cut pieces of fabric for flowers. Or head to the thrift store or garage sales for garments which can become your fabric scraps. Be creative!

Back to School: Transform it Today! (Part 3)

Today is another nostalgic transformation. Miss Tickles received an adorable outfit from her aunt and uncle for christmas, but she was only able to wear it a few times before she outgrew it. In that time though, she was able to stain it too much. Instead of getting rid of it completely, I decided to use the butterflies on a plain hand-me-down pink shirt given to My Princess.

Original ShirtsI found some crochet lace in mom’s stash to add too. I did a small zig zag stitch at the top and bottom of the lace to attach it to the shirt. Then used fusible webbing and a small zig zag stitch to attach the butterflies.

Transformed Shirt

I didn’t want to waste the cute flower pattern on the back of the shirt, so I pulled out a pair of thrift store pants with slightly worn knees that I bought a few months ago.Original Pants and leftover shirt

I used the fusible webbing and then hand stitched the hearts on to the pants.

Back to School: Transform it Today! (Part 2)

Today’s transformation tugged at my heart strings a bit. After sorting through baby clothes a few months ago, my sister and I pulled out any of the clothes that were stained and put them in the get rid of box. We figured with all the girl clothes we had, there wasn’t a lot of benefit to keeping the stained ones.

There were a couple outfits that I couldn’t part with though even if they were stained. This particular one has been worn by both My Princess and Miss Tickles around nine months old. It was one of my favorites.

Original Shirt

Got a little emotional looking through old pictures to find that one. They grow up so fast!

Since I didn’t want to get rid of that shirt, I decided to use the cute hearts on a new shirt (well new to us plain thrift store shirt).

Plain Brown Shirt

I cut out the cute hearts.

Applique

Using fusible webbing, I attached the hearts on to the shirt and did a small zig zag stitch around them.

My Princess saw it for the first time and said, “that’s so pretty!”

I am happy that she can wear it once again.

Give new life to nostalgic clothing for your kids. See another transformation of a stained shirt tomorrow.

Back to school: Transform It Today! {Part 1}

It’s back to school time in our part of the country. Maybe you are trying to figure out how to afford the long list of school supplies required for each child. Then in looking at your children’s wardrobes, you realize the kids have grown several inches over the summer and nothing is going to fit them for the fall!

A friend of mine wanted to take her granddaughter shopping for some new clothes for school. At the store where her granddaughter preferred shopping (which shall remain unnamed), it was going to cost about $90 for one outfit. She wasn’t going to be able to help out much with clothing for her granddaughter at that rate. They did, however, manage to find some really good deals on the clearance racks. So, if your budget is tight, the clearance racks are an obvious place to check out.

If you have a wallet that is crying out for relief, we decided to offer you some suggestions this week to help with clothing your kids by doing some easy transformations. We are deviating from our normal weekly schedule and making every day Transform It Today!

First of all, we are starting with a simple plain shirt. Plain t-shirts are usually much less expensive than ones with designs, appliques, and so forth. You may even find some at garage sales or thrift shops that are still in good condition for little cost.

Original Gray shirt

Then we pulled out of previous thrift store finds this shirt, which we bought mainly for the butterfly print. We really did not care much for the shirt itself, but the butterfly was pretty.

Original Butterfly shirt

I started cutting out the butterfly before I remembered to take a picture!

I cut around the screen printed butterfly and ironed fusible webbing to the back side. Then I trimmed the fabric close to the screen print leaving a small blue edge around the butterfly for applique stitching.Butterfly appliqueAfter removing the paper from the fusible webbing, I positioned the butterfly on the shirt, laid a small cloth over the applique to protect the screen printing and pressed with the iron according to the directions on the fusible webbing. Because of the stretchy fabric on both the shirt and the applique, I did a small zig-zag stitch around the butterfly, rather than a satin applique stitch.

It certainly brightened up the gray shirt, but needed something more. So I pulled out the craft foam stamps we were experimenting with a couple weeks ago and stamped some flowers with fabric paint. Before stamping, I covered a piece of cardboard with wax paper and slipped it between the front and back of the shirt so the paint would not bleed through to the back of the shirt. Then I added a little more detail to the stamped flowers using a brush with fabric paint. When the fabric paint had dried for 24 hours, I ironed the shirt to heat set the paint using paper towel between the shirt layers and between the shirt and iron. (When doing this be sure to follow your paint instructions for heat setting.) Now we no longer have a plain gray shirt, we have a beautiful bright butterfly looking for some flowers. I think My Princess will enjoy wearing this transformed shirt.Butterfly on shirtlarge stamped flowerSmall stamped flowersTransformed Butterfly ShirtT-Shirt TransformationWhat can you transform this week?

Back to School: To Write Lunch Box Notes or Not

Foody FridayIt sounds like such a sweet idea. Each morning as you lovingly make your children’s healthy lunches before they head off to school, you take the time to compose a special note to each one along with a lovely picture you carefully draw. Then with a kiss on each note you tuck it into the right lunch box hidden underneath the sandwich. Then at lunch time, when your child picks up her sandwich, whala! There is a note from Mom letting her know how much she loves her and is thinking about her. And little brother (who doesn’t read yet) opens his lunch box and finds a note from Mom covered with X’s and O’s and a mommy dinosaur and little boy dinosaur hugging, letting him know how much she loves him today. How sweet! It makes each child’s day go so much better.

Ok, back to reality! We all know that mornings are usually hectic and unless mom gets up while it is still night (kind of like that Proverbs 31 woman), she is probably not going to have time to compose and draw lovely notes while she makes lunches and breakfast and tries to get the kids out of bed and dressed and makes sure each one has everything gathered that they need for the day into their backpacks and out the door before the bus takes off. Whew! But if she doesn’t stick a note in their lunch how will they know she loves them and how will they ever make it through the day?Lunch Notes

Melinda and I thought it would be fun to give you some inspirational ideas for lunch box notes, but as I was doing some research, I began wondering if that was the right thing to do. It appears that lunch box notes have become a big business. You can now purchase pre-made lunch box notes with jokes, trivia, word games, puzzles, cute sayings, encouraging phrases like “You are the smartest!” and so forth. That way you can just toss a note into each lunch box as you throw lunch together. They are advertised as easy meaningful ways to stay connected with your child throughout the day. Really?

So if your child does not take a lunch, but eats the school lunches, are they going to feel unloved? What if your child gets teased by other kids because of the “mommy” notes? Do you want to embarrass your children? Some comments I read in my research seemed to indicate that some parents thought it was fun to embarrass their child. I think that’s sad. Don’t we have enough bullying going on these days without our help? For what age would these notes be a good thing and at what age should you stop?

Maybe I am not the right person to be discussing this. After all, I homeschooled my kids and if I wanted them to know I loved them or give them some encouragement, I could tell them right then. I just want to encourage all of you who are sending your kids off to school every morning not to jump on a fad because it seems sweet or everyone on Pinterest is doing it! If it is something you want to do, do it the first week of school, one time. Then talk to your kids about it. If they would rather you not do that, don’t. If they liked it, do it occasionally so it is a special treat that doesn’t become routine and meaningless. And by all means, be creative. And personal. You may think a handwritten note or a picture you draw would not look as nice as the perfectly scripted font and image on a prepackaged note, but it will mean far more to your child…because YOU did it!

This Mom found a creative way to send notes to her children on napkins.

This Dad drew pictures on his children’s sandwich bags with markers.

This Mom made some downloadable note templates with space for you to write your own note. Just look online for many other ideas with downloadable templates you can use, if you want to go this route.

If your child has a lunch box with a flat lid, you could paint the inside of the lid with chalkboard paint and then write special notes on the lid.

Use your cookie cutters as stencils to make notes like we did in this post for gift tags.

Cut up some of the art work you have done when you are experimenting with stamps, or paint or whatever and write a note on it.

Something else you may want to consider is, for each of your children, what is the way that they feel most loved? Dr. Gary Chapman wrote a book called The Five Love Languages of Children based off of his book for couples titled, The Five Love Languages.Five Love Languages of Children The 5 Love Languages of Children

His basic premise is that people respond in various ways to the five main ways love is expressed (or Love Languages)- Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Acts of Service, Physical Touch, and Gifts. When you know the primary love language of an individual and “speak” that language, the person feels loved. For example, if your child’s main love language is quality time, and you give them lots of gifts, but don’t spend quality time with them, they will not feel loved. Perhaps your main love language is gifts and you think that is how others will feel most loved, but you must learn to speak the love language of the other person or they will not feel that love. That is not to say that the person will not have secondary love languages, but if the primary one is not being met at least some of the time, they will feel lacking in love. His books are interesting and would be helpful in learning how to relate to your family members. He also has a book about teenagers.

Five Love Languages of Teenagers

The 5 Love Languages of Teenagers New Edition: The Secret to Loving Teens Effectively
Sending notes would be an expression of the love language, words of affirmation. So maybe sending notes to your child in their lunch box would not be the best way to express love to your child. Maybe your child needs quality time to feel loved. Perhaps you could arrange to occasionally visit your child’s school at lunchtime and have lunch with your child. Maybe giving your child a big hug before leaving for school and then again when they come home is the expression of love they need (physical touch). Perhaps doing something special for your child, like a chore that you normally require them to do, would speak volumes of love to them. (Sorry, but fixing them meals is usually not considered an act of service to them!) If their love language is gifts, you don’t have to be buying them things all the time. Maybe baking a batch of their favorite cookies would be a special gift to them. Get to know your kids and “speak” love to them in the way they will most respond to your love and if that is sending notes to them in their lunch, go for it!

Back to School: Save money on Fun Notebooks and Pencils

Thoroughly Thrifty Thursday

The back to school sales are great for stocking up on notebooks, pencils, glue, and office supplies, but the best deals are always on the most plain, dull looking items. I got notebooks like these, which just come in a handful of solid colors for less than 20 cents each. Not very exciting or enticing to write in.

Plain NotebookMy Princess has been begging for a pretty notebook of her own, so I decided to make one for her. It needed to be either something to do with a princess or dancing. So I cut a silhouette of a ballerina from some glitter scrapbook paper and chose a background paper. Material for notebookI decided to give the background paper a texture by covering it with mod podge and laying crinkled tissue paper on top. Tissue on paperWhen that dried, it seemed to need something more. So I pulled out the craft foam for some stamps (see last week’s post) and stamped some flowers and the word DANCE on top of the tissue paper.Stamped paperThen it was time to glue the paper onto the cover of the notebook with mod podge and glue the ballerina on top of that. When all was dried another layer of mod podge was put over the whole cover. Dance NotebookA little dancing princess needs pencils, so rather than spend money on fancier pencils, I cut one inch strips of scrapbook paper to cover some plain pencils. These were also glued with mod podge.Paper covered pencilsThis would be a great activity to do with your kids before school starts. Instead of buying the more expensive notebooks and pencils, customise the less expensive ones. Your kids can choose designs that are of interest to them and even personalize them with their names. Then they will have something no one else will. Of course, you can buy supplies like the fancy designed duct tape or washi tape to cover your notebooks and pencils with as well. Or you could cut out pictures and words from magazines to cover a notebook and pencils and have personalized design with little cost.Pencils covered with magazine picturesNotebook with magazine collage

Back to School: Books About Boys and Girls

Read With Me Wednesday

Mom and I just recently read three fascinating books by Dr. Leonard Sax. He is a family physician and research psychologist. He has done numerous studies on the differences between boys and girls. We heard about this author from a speaker at the homeschool conference back in April.

Leonard Sax Books

If you are a parent, teacher, grandparent, or someone that works with kids, these books will be interesting and beneficial for you to read. It has changed the way I see my own kids as well as others and how to deal with them in the best way for how they were made.

Boys Adrift

Boys Adrift: The Five Factors Driving the Growing Epidemic of Unmotivated Boys and Underachieving Young Men
Boys Adrift arrived first, and I could hardly put it down because I wanted to give it to Melinda and her husband (who have been working with youth and are transitioning to families) as soon as possible. I could see that they needed this information and needed to be able to share it with other parents. Not only does Dr. Sax share information from numerous studies, but as a physician, he shares of his personal experience in dealing with children as patients for many years.

In this day of political correctness, much of what he has to say may fall on deaf ears concerning the differences between boys and girls, but it makes so much sense. Boys are falling behind academically in our country and he demonstrates many of the possible causes for that in his discussion of the ways schools are geared more toward the educational needs of girls than boys. Boys learn differently from girls and need to be taught in different ways to be most effective.

We need to realize that being different does not mean one sex is superior and one is inferior, we are just made different. More boys than girls are being put on medications than ever before. In the doctor’s experience, putting a child on medication becomes the easy way out, when there are other changes that can be made to solve the problems in many cases.

Excessive video game playing is altering the motivation of young boys to do anything with their lives even into adulthood. The exposure to chemical toxins in our environments, especially the endocrine blockers, are causing boys to mature much later physically and girls to mature at much younger ages than in generations previous. Dr. Sax also believes that young boys are lacking in good positive role models to help lead them in the passage from childhood to manhood.

I recommend this book to all parents, teachers, youth leaders, grandparents, pastors. You may not agree with all Dr. Sax has to say, but I am sure this book will make you think. If you have influence in any aspect of the lives of children, you need to understand what is going on in the lives of young people in this culture today. -Jan

Girls on the Edge

Girls on the Edge: The Four Factors Driving the New Crisis for Girls–Sexual Identity, the Cyberbubble, Obsessions, Environmental Toxins
The problems Dr. Sax addresses in this book were not new to me, but much of the research and his experience as a doctor concerning the “why” of these problems was fascinating. After sharing the problems: sexual identity, the cyber bubble, obsessions, environmental toxins, he spent several chapters on ways of dealing with those problems with individual girls and helping to aid in their growth and development into healthy, confident women.

One thing I found interesting, was his discussion of sports. With the push for girls to be able to participate in all the same sports as boys, he does not say girls can’t do the same sports. However, he clearly showed how girls need to be coached with different training exercises and warmups because of the physical differences in their bodies. Girls tend to receive concussions more than boys (because girls have less fluid cushioning their brains than boys), and they also receive more knee injuries (because they are training in the same ways as boys and not in the ways that help a girl’s body to be strengthened correctly.)

Another thing that I liked about the book was how he showed the need for girls to be involved in spiritual expression and relationships (regardless of whether the parents were involved in any spiritual expression.) There is research that correlates the relationship between spirituality and a lower risk of depression in girls. Girls are growing up with many pressures that did not even exist 20 years ago and we need to understand what that current culture is like and how we can help our daughters (granddaughters, friends) navigate the pressures and become amazing women. -Jan

Why Gender Matters

Why Gender Matters: What Parents and Teachers Need to Know about the Emerging Science of Sex Differences
I’m sure we all remember when studies came out telling us that boys and girls are fundamentally the same and that it’s all nurture and society that make them they way they are. Give a boy dolls, and he will like dolls. Give a girl trucks, and she will like playing with trucks. But the more research that is done, they are learning that boys and girls are different from the start and it begins in their brain. Their brains function differently and that effects everything else.

“…girls and boys do differ from one another in systematic ways that should be understood and made use of, not covered up or ignored.”

This information is so important when dealing with children. If you know how a boy’s or a girl’s brain works, you know how to approach him or her for discipline, school, and activities. Dr. Sax talks about how girls and boys differ when it comes to how they hear, see, feel pain, etc. and also discusses the differences in how that relates to school, sex, drugs, discipline, etc. It’s enlightening and disturbing to see how our culture has misunderstood the way the gender differences affect every aspect of these kids’ lives. Celebrating the gender differences can open up a world of possibilities for our future generations.

While I don’t agree with every detail of his discipline method, I believe it has a great place to start, especially for people who just haven’t been doing it at all. He says,

“There’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Parenting is an art, not a science. But you can’t duck this responsibility. If you don’t discipline your child, nobody will.”

I highly recommend reading this book because the information is important. I have used some of this knowledge in my approach to my children arleady and have seen the impact it made for success. -Melinda

Back to School: Transform to a Backpack

Transform it Tuesday

Back to school is coming up for most people. Lot’s of back to school shopping happening in town last weekend. Since we are homeschooling, we haven’t really done any shopping for back to school supplies but we are getting into thoughts of school. Today, Backpacks are on the brain!

My Princess’ 4th birthday is just a month away, so I have been trying to think of what to give her. Since we will be traveling a lot in the near future, I have been wanting to get/make some bags for my kids to put their toys in for the car. They have backpack’s for dance and piano stuff, but I wanted something specifically for traveling.

A friend gave me some of her daughter’s hand me down clothes. Most of them will still be too big for her for the next couple years, but there was a jean skirt that was just too cute to pass up. I knew she would love the pink and sparkly detail.

Skirt Before Transformation

Decoration on skirt

When I pulled it out the other day, all I could see was an adorable bag. I set out to make that a reality. I kept thinking of the drawstring backpacks that are popular especially for sports stuff.

Backpack transformed from skirtI sewed the bottom closed and made a liner with pink fabric. Using the same pink fabric, I made the straps and attached them to the bottom of the back side. I knew I wanted to use the belt loops to make it draw up to close, and I thought that making it look like a belt would be a fun idea. The bow can be untied and the straps can be lengthened to fit as she grows.

Back to School: Sick Day

Real Me Monday

This week we were starting a Back to School series. Well what happens now and then during the school year? Sick days!

Mom isn’t feeling well, so we are taking the day off! Hope you are all doing well. We’ll be back tomorrow with a fun Back to School Transformation.

Go read a book or something and get some rest.
